1. Read the scoreboard
Start with the objective. A drive that needs a touchdown asks a different question from one that can succeed with a field goal. Check the game clock, yards to the goal, current down, yards needed for a first down and timeouts remaining.
The field position runs from your own goal line toward the opponent's end zone. The first-down marker shows the next target; reaching it renews the downs, unless the play has already ended the drive.
2. Choose your call
- Short wide
- Work toward the boundary. A completion may still end inbounds.
- Short middle
- Try to gain space between defenders. Plan for the possibility of a running clock.
- Deep pass
- Trade a longer gain for the risk of an incompletion or turnover.
- Run
- Gain ground while accounting for an inbounds tackle and the next setup.
- Spike
- Intentionally stop the clock when available. It uses a down and is not a free timeout.
- Timeout
- Spend one remaining timeout at an eligible dead ball. The game prevents charging it twice for the same dead ball.
A field-goal option appears when the modeled attempt is 55 yards or shorter. This game estimates kick distance as yards to the goal line plus 18 yards, based on the median offset in its source sample. The attempt ends the possession whether it is made or missed. After a touchdown, choose an untimed extra point or two-point try.
3. See what happened
The result gives you the gain, the clock change and the reason the clock stopped or kept running. Thinking time is free. Game time is charged for the modeled setup and live play after you call the action.
A drive can end through scoring, a turnover, turnover on downs, a safety or the clock. The result is checked against this challenge's objective. It is a single-possession challenge, not a simulated final score for an entire game.
4. Review, collect and try again
Open the play log to revisit each state and call. A completed challenge can award its card according to the displayed reward rule. Repeating a drive does not mint another copy of the same reward. A new Practice or archive start uses an earned attempt or All Access, including a retry after a loss. Reading a saved replay does not start another drive.

Controls and short glossary
Use pointer or touch controls, or Tab through the buttons and activate them with Enter or Space. Settings include sound and motion controls where available. See accessibility and control details.
- Down
- An offensive opportunity to move toward the next marker.
- Inbounds
- The ball finishes inside the field of play; the next setup may cost game time.
- Out of bounds
- The play finishes beyond a sideline. In this late-game model, the next snap starts the clock.
- Try
- The scoring play after a touchdown. It is untimed in this simulation.
- Seed
- A value used to reproduce the simulation with the same version and action sequence.
